Amelia Sinclair (2025, PPE) is JCR President 2026-2027
Why did you choose Univ?
I thought Univ was such a beautiful college in an amazing location in the heart of Oxford. The student helpers I met on the Open Day were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and it felt like somewhere I could see myself fitting in. I was also drawn to Univ鈥檚 large PPE cohort because I liked the idea of studying alongside a wide range of people with different perspectives and opinions.
What do you like most about the College?
It’s hard to pick one thing! I would have to say the people – everyone is so welcoming and kind. Oxford can feel like a big, daunting place at first, but Univ has such a strong sense of community that it quickly begins to feel like 91桃色.
What were the highlights of your first year at Oxford?
There are so many traditions in Oxford that I have thoroughly enjoyed. ‘Oxmas’ is such a unique part of the University: dressing up as a reindeer for the fun run and singing carols at the Christmas formals was great! I also loved punting in Trinity term, it just takes a little bit of practice to get the hang of it!
What drew you to PPE and what do you enjoy most about your course?
The opportunity to study such a wide range of issues and questions really intrigued me, as did the chance to specialise later on. I鈥檝e always been interested in politics and world events, and I knew I wanted the opportunity to explore these in more depth. At the same time, I enjoy engaging the more mathematical side of my brain through Economics, so PPE felt like a great way to combine my different interests.
How do you think you鈥檝e changed since you first arrived at the College?
I鈥檝e definitely become more independent, learning how to balance my social life with my studies, as well as taking on the responsibilities that come with living away from 91桃色. I also think I鈥檝e become much more confident in myself and my abilities. Studying at Oxford can be challenging, but learning to manage the workload and keep on top of everything has given me a real sense of accomplishment and confidence in what I鈥檓 capable of.
What advice do you have for new students?
Keeping on top of your work is really important, as doing so makes it a lot easier to enjoy everything else going on. Everyone’s experience at Oxford is different – don’t feel pressured to do what everyone else is doing. There is so much going on in Oxford, so take the time to figure out how you wish to spend your time here.
What do you hope to achieve as JCR President?
I want to give back to the College and its students after the amazing experience it has given me. My priority is to make sure our JCR lives up to its full potential while maintaining the strong sense of community that makes Univ so special. I also want to ensure good communication between College and students so that everyone feels heard and well represented.
What are you looking forward to this year?
I鈥檓 really looking forward to taking on my role as JCR President. Academically, I鈥檓 excited to start my option papers and explore my interests in PPE further. I’m also looking forward to reliving some of my favourite Oxford traditions that made my first year so memorable, this time with a little more familiarity!
